EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State went 2-0 on Saturday, defeating both Toledo and the University of Detroit Mercy, 7-0.
"I think the biggest thing is that we were pushed in both matches, in certain spots, but I think everyone felt that they were at home," head coach Gene Orlando said.
The Spartans won every match except one on the day, when Michael Dube and Mac Roy fell in No. 2 doubles to Detroit's Nathan Ponton and Patryk Koscielski, 7-5.
However, eight sets on the day went to tiebreakers, including five against Detroit.
"They were able to fight through it," Orlando said. "They found a way to win."
The freshmen for Michigan State stepped up in a big way, as Jasper Koenen and Michael Dube both won their singles matches in two sets from their No. 6 and No. 5 singles spots.
In doubles, Harry Jadun partnered with Dube against Toledo, winning their match at the No. 2 spot against Nick Wong and Mark Singnil, 6-2. Doug Zade partnered with Koenen in No. 3 doubles. Zade and Koenen were the only doubles team to win both of their matches.
"I'm happy with the wins," senior Gijs Linders said. "No match is easy. Once you step out on to the court, nothing on paper matters."
Brett Forman won both of his matches from his No. 2 singles spot with identical scores at 7-5, 6-0.
Linders, Jadun and Mac Roy also won both of their singles matches.
With the two wins, the Spartans move to 4-3 on the season.
Extra Notes
Continuing its doubles excellence, Michigan State has not lost a doubles point since Jan. 18 at NC State.
Zade and Koenen are now a perfect 3-0 in doubles on the season. Koenen's only loss in doubles play this season is at Georgia.
