Spartans Fall to Eastern Michigan

EAST LANSING, Mich. â€" The Michigan State wrestling team fell in its home opener to Eastern Michigan, 34-0, Wednesday night at Jenison Field House.
"We weren't aggressive enough tonight," said MSU head coach Tom Minkel. "We kind of hung back and tried to win it technically rather than go out and make it a fight. We also gave the guys some time off for Thanksgiving, and weight control this week was an issue for us. I told the guys they can come out of this dual feeling sorry for themselves, or you can say look, I don't want to go through that again, and what am I going to do to rectify that. We have to mature here, and we're a young team, but we have to grow up in a hurry."
Devan Marry of Eastern Michigan began the dual with a 9-3 decision over Joe Johnson at 157 pounds. Following a major decision by Dakota Juarez at 165 pounds over Travis Curley, Shane Shadaia battled at 174, but eventually dropped a 4-0 match to Jacob Davis. Shwan Shadaia also lost by a score of 4-0 in his bout at 184 pounds to Derek Hillman.
The Eagles (4-0) increased their lead with major decisions in the 197 and heavyweight matches.
At 125, sophomore Mitch Rogaliner and Armando Torres were tied at 3 heading into the final period, but Torres escaped with 90 seconds left and held off Rogaliner the rest of the way to record a 4-3 victory.
Redshirt freshmen Patrick Blommel (133 pounds) and Mark Bozzo (149) both wrestled for the first time in a dual at Jenison, but came up short in their matches.
The Spartans (0-4) return to action Sunday, Dec. 6 to face Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant at 2 p.m. The dual will be streamed live on WatchESPN.
