Virkus: Day in the Life of Women's Tennis
Entry #3: Lexi Baylis
By: Emmy Virkus
As finals are approaching, the snow starts to fall and Thanksgiving break is creeping up on us, it is very difficult for many students (especially like myself) to zero in on lectures during these last couple days of class. Being the transition between Halloween and Christmas, this short-lived break that we encounter for a few days is viewed to many students as a "tease" due to it being close, but not close enough, to our even more cherished Christmas break.
Being a Michigan native, sophomore Lexi Baylis does not have a long trip home for what seems to be a quick weekend. This makes it much easier to continue special family traditions that were seemingly so simple before siblings grew up and normal routines altered.
"I am really looking forward to hanging out with my family," shared Baylis. "When you're away for college, life can be pretty busy, especially when we get very few weekends off. It's the little things, like watching ESPN with my dad, that I miss. It is also fun to do our annual family gift exchange, Black Friday shopping, decorating the Christmas tree and watching my dad's favorite holiday film, 'It's a Wonderful Life".
As soon as anxiety dwindles down, the love and company of family takes over. Students can't help but take in how lucky they are in these little moments. For Baylis, this [Thanksgiving] time of year is one of the most special for both her and her family as she reflects on several things that she is thankful for.
"With so many things happening around the world lately, it makes me realize just how lucky I really am," Baylis said. "I am very thankful for my family. They mean so much to me, and I would not be where I am without them. I am also thankful for the opportunity to play tennis every day with my best friends at the greatest university in the world, Michigan State".
Now let's get to what's really important - our thanksgiving feast! That time of day where the clock is ticking and everybody's stomach starts to growl with anticipation and excitement. If you know anything about MSUWT, one of Baylis' most prized possessions is any kind of food that is put in front of her.
"As most of my teammates will tell you, food is an aspect of my life that I take very seriously," explained Baylis. "Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays because I get to eat everything that I love - cheesy potatoes and lots of bread - while spending time with the people I love".
As the weekend unfortunately ends with quick goodbyes and "see you soons", it's easy to become a little disappointed about returning to campus for intense final exam preparation.
"It's always a fun time in the Baylis Household, so I am definitely looking forward to some good laughs, good food and lots of good sleep before things get crazy again," Baylis said. "I'm feeling pretty good about my [Mechanical Engineering] finals, despite them not being until the end of the week. What will help me put my nose to the grindstone will be the joy I will feel once I get to come home to my family again for an even longer period of time".
