Virkus: Day in the Life of Women's Tennis
Entry #2: Davina Nguyen
By: Emmy Virkus
As the leaves change, the air becomes crisp and our football family continues to battle for a Big Ten title, being on Michigan State's campus is nothing short of blissful. With the fall vibes in full bloom, it is a sublime time to take in our school's beauty and enjoy all of our [short-lived] free moments. For freshman Davina Nguyen, reflecting on her first few months as a Spartan student-athlete has been a time of excitement and incredibly remarkable adventures.
Q & A with Davina
What were your biggest worries/fears when you first arrived on campus? Do you still have those?
The biggest worries or fears I had was not being able to make friends and not making it to class on time since campus is so big. Now that I'm here and in the swing of things more, I realized that it's more difficult to not meet new people and there are a lot of ways to get from point A to point B easily.
What do you like to do in your (small window of) free time?
I like to take cat naps, even if I get a good night's sleep…practice, studying and conditioning make the days super long so it's nice to catch a nap every once in awhile.
Where are you from, and what do you miss most about home?
I'm from Shelby Township, Michigan. I miss being able to drive places, the home-cooked Vietnamese meals, and seeing my family the most, especially my baby sister.
What's been your favorite experience at MSU so far?
My favorite experience at MSU has been just hanging out with my teammates outside of tennis because they're so fun to be around
What's the toughest part of college tennis?
Balancing everything and the conditioning/weights are at a different caliber than what I'm used to.
How are your classes in college compared to high school?
Classes are so much bigger and a lot less personal. It's also a lot of on your own things you have to do in order to keep up, which is something that I wasn't used to when I first got here.
How do you feel about the dorm life? What is your favorite and least favorite part?
I personally don't mind the dorms. It's great because it's so close to everything and super convenient. It's also a great way to socialize with people and make new friends. I'd have to say my least favorite part is not being able to have a car on campus and climbing out of bed every night.
Overall, how did you think your first fall season went on our team?
I definitely struggled balancing everything at first, but the team has been very supportive. I think the adjustment happened well. It was a struggle at first, but slowly getting into the groove.
What were you for Halloween this year?
I used a costume I had from my sophomore year, which was little red riding hood. New costumes are too expensive.
Coming from Michigan, you are well aware of how cold it can get from this time through the winter. How do you feel about that in College?
I'm terrified because even though I've lived here my whole life, I'm usually never outside besides walking from a car to a heated building. In college, I'm going to have to find a way to stay warm while getting to class in negative temperatures, which is something I'm not looking forward to.
What is your go-to outfit before you head to class?
Anything comfortable…usually sweatpants and a hoodie.
What are you looking forward to the most about our spring tennis season?
I'm looking forward to finally being a part of the team as a player and really starting the first year of college tennis in the spring season
