WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Michigan State women's tennis team claimed three doubles matches before freshman Davina Nguyen and junior Athena Trouillot notched wins in singles on Saturday. Nguyen and Trouillot remain unbeaten in their singles draws at the Purdue Invite in West Lafayette.
"It was a good day overall, as everyone got a doubles win," said head coach Simone Jardim. "We saw some great performances in singles. I'm proud of the way we competed today as a team."
All of MSU's doubles teams earned victories on the second day of play. After claiming two matches on Friday, Trouillot and Nguyen defeated Notre Dame's Brooke Broda and Rachel Chong, 6-3. The combo fell in its final match, 6-2, to Andjela Djokovic and Nicole Robinson of Purdue.
Sophomore Aslina Chua and junior Emmy Virkus won their first match as a duo, knocking off Erin Rodriguez and Emily Struble of Miami (Ohio), 6-4. They started the day with a loss against the Fighting Irish's Darby Mountford and Monica Roberts, 6-3.
After dropping their opening match to Illinois' Daniela Pedraza Novak and Jade Hilton, sophomore Lexi Baylis and junior Erin Faulkner rebounded to beat Madison Harrison and Caroline Kelly of Mississippi State, 6-1, for their first win of the tournament.
Nguyen remained unbeaten this weekend in singles play, advancing over Notre Dame's Chong in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5. She came into the Purdue Invite with a 2-3 record in singles in the fall season.
Trouillot also stayed on the winning side in her draw, taking the first and third set against Zoe Douglas of Iowa. She opened with a 6-3 effort before dropping the second set 6-1. Trouillot bounced back to run away with the final set, 6-2.
Baylis dropped her singles match on day two, 7-6 (5), 6-4 to Mississippi State's Harrison. Chua also played to a tiebreaker in the opening set, but was unable to come away with a win, falling to Anzhelika Shapovalova of Miami (Ohio), 7-6 (5), 6-4. The Redhawks tallied a second victory over a Spartan in singles on Saturday, with Erin Rodriguez defeating Virkus, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.
