WILMINGTON, N.C. â€" The Michigan State women's golf team tied a season-low round with a 3-over-par 291 in the first round of the Landfall Tradition on Friday and is tied for fourth place in the 18-team tournament, just four shots behind leader Duke (287).
The elite event, which is being played at the Pete Dye Course at the Country Club of Landfall, includes five of the last 10 NCAA champions and 13 teams inside the top 50 of the Golfstat rankings.
Senior Gabby Yurik carded a career-low 2-under 70 to lead the Spartans on Friday. Yurik, who shot a team-best six birdies in her round, is currently tied for fourth place. She birdied three of her last four holes on the front nine, and remarkably achieved the same feat on the back nine as well.
Sophomore Sarah Burnham also shot under par with a 71 (-1) and is tied for eighth place. She started out 3-over through her first two holes, but rallied to collect 10 pars and five birdies against just one bogey the rest of her round.
Freshman Carolyn Markley is tied for 28th at 2-over 74 and senior Alison Knowles is tied for 45th at 4-over 76.
Sophomore Katie Sharp shot an 81.
The Spartans will tee off at 9:15 a.m. from hole No. 1 in Saturday's second round, along with Notre Dame and North Carolina State. Live scoring of the entire 54-hole tournament is available on golfstat.com.
