EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team travels to West Lafayette for the Purdue Invite from Friday, Oct. 2, to Sunday, Oct. 4. The Spartans join Big Ten foes Illinois, Iowa and Purdue at the event.
"Last weekend (at the Wildcat Invite) we definitely saw good things in doubles, and this weekend we want to keep progressing as we get more matches under our belts," said head coach Simone Jardim. "It will be competitive. It is a tough invite with a lot of good teams, and it will be good for our players to play against that sort of competition."
Playing this weekend at the Purdue Invite will be the No. 44-ranked doubles team of Aniki Wind and Hanna Sohn from Memphis, while Mississippi State will bring a pair of ranked players in singles in No. 23 Jasmine Lee and No. 83 Georgiana Patrasc. Notre Dame and Purdue currently have several ranked players as well, but will come to West Lafayette without them as they travel to the Riviera/ITA Women' All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, California.
"You get a chance to see and compete against some really good players, and for us this is a chance to get some good wins and build confidence," Jardim said.
At the Wildcat Invite, junior Athena Trouillot went 3-1 in singles to claim third in her bracket. Trouillot teamed up with freshman Davina Nguyen in doubles for another three wins, as the duo went 3-2.
"It was a really high level of competition and tough on my body," said Nguyen. "It was a really good experience, though. AT (Athena Trouillot) helped me push myself, and we worked well as a team. It was a good introduction to the college level."
Nguyen won two matches in singles play, recording a mark of 2-3 in her first-collegiate tournament.
"I had a lot more energy on Friday, but by Sunday my body was breaking down," Nguyen said. "I want to minimize errors and play as efficiently as possible this weekend. I am looking to consistently play with more intensity."
Sophomore Lexi Baylis and junior Erin Faulkner, along with the combination of sophomore Allie Baer and freshman Emily Metcalf found success last weekend, making it to the semifinals of the doubles bracket. Both teams ended the three-day tournament with just the one loss.
