BERKELEY, Calif. - The Michigan State women's tennis team came back from a 0-3 deficit on Monday to capture the 4-3 win. The Spartans won the last four matches of the day to defeat the No. 72-ranked Fresno State Bulldogs, in the 2015 ITA Kick-Off at the University of California-Berkeley. MSU improves to 3-1 on the young season, while Fresno State falls to 0-2 on the year.
"It was an unbelievable match," said head coach Simone Jardim of the win against her alma mater. "We started off very passive in doubles. We really started playing aggressive in singles, and it was a great start. I am really proud of them. It never really felt like our backs were against the wall. We knew we were in all of the matches, and we knew it would come down to Catherine Parenteau's match. She played her heart out and got the victory. Today was a really great win."
Fresno State started off strong, taking a 3-0 start in the match. The Bulldogs took the doubles point after winning at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, and at No. 3 doubles, 6-3. Fresno State kept the foot on the peddle at No. 1 singles, where the 47th ranked singles player Sophie Watts defeated sophomore Erin Faulkner, 6-2, 6-2. The Bulldogs Maiar Sherif Ahmed defeated freshman Aslina Chua at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0.
Sophomore Athena Trouillot notched the first victory of the day for Michigan State at No. 5 singles. Trouillot defeated Fresno State's Anneka Watts, 6-2, 6-1.
At No. 6 singles, junior Emily Meyers beat Tanya Murtagh of Fresno State, 6-4, 6-2. Meyers now holds a record of 9-5 in singles play this season.
Freshman Lexi Baylis tied the match at No. 3 singles, defeating the Bulldogs' Aishwarya Agrawal, 7-5, 6-3.
The match came down to No. 4 singles where Parenteau faced Sofya Malysheva of Fresno State. Malysheva won the first set 6-7 (2). Parenteau then grabbed control of the match winning the next two sets, 6-2, 6-3, to secure the victory for MSU.
"It is really amazing," said Parenteau. I lost the first set 6-7, and I was really upset. I looked at the board and I thought that I could be the clinching point. I just didn't want to let the team down."
The Spartans return to action on Sunday, Feb. 1, as they host Toledo and Bowling Green at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The action will begin at 10 a.m. and will be broadcasted around the world at radiotennis.com
