BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Michigan State women's swimming and diving team went 1-1 on Friday evening. The Spartans defeated the Thundering Herd of Marshall, 185-115, and fell to the Bowling Green Falcons, 175-125. Michigan State tallied four victories on the night.
"I thought that the girls did well," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "I think we improved upon last week and it is good momentum going into next week. I don't think we anticipated the meet to go as long as it did, but it will help us prepare for next weekend."
Junior Elizabeth Brown tallied the first victory of the night in the 200 butterfly. She finished with a time of 2:03.85.
Freshman Madison Nowak continued her strong 2015 campaign, taking third in the 100 backstroke. She clocked in at 58.08.
In the 100 breaststroke, senior Shelby Lacy took third finishing at 1:05.42.
The Spartans took two of the three top spots in the 1650 freestyle. Senior Becca Berman finished in second with a 17:21.10 finish. Junior Chelsea Abbott took third with a 17:22.40 finish.
In the 100 butterfly, MSU took home the top two times. Sophomore Sarah Love was victorious with a time of 56.96, while Elizabeth Brown finished in second at 57.13.
Junior Marina Borri recorded a second place finish in the 200 breaststroke. She finished with a time of 2:21.33.
The Spartans dominated the boards on Friday night, taking the top-three scores in the 1-meter event. Senior Cristee Cordes took first-place points with a score of 302.10, sophomore Madeline Sewell took second with 296.65, and senior Alison Menzies took third with a 257.25 score. Both scores for Cordes and Sewell were season and career bests at Michigan State. MSU also took the top-three spots in the 3-meter event. Cordes notched her second victory of the night, finishing with a 321.85, Menzies followed right behind with a 321.25 score, and Sewell finished third at 261.20.
The Spartans return back to action on Friday as they host Big Ten foe Ohio State. The meet will begin at 4 p.m. at McCaffree Pool at IM West.
