DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 63 Michigan State men's tennis team fell to No. 12 Duke in its first match of the season, 7-0, Friday evening at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
"We dug ourselves a hole," head coach Gene Orlando said. "They have a good team and it was tough to win against them."
Sophomore Brett Forman and senior Harry Jadun took both of their opponents to third sets, despite their opponents' top 150 rankings. Forman, in the No. 3 singles spot, fell to No. 112 Bruno Semenzato, 6-2, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5). No. 103 Raphael Hemmeler defeated Jadun in No. 4 singles, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
"We know who we are," Orlando said. "The numbers don't tell the whole story; we aren't that far off.
"There's no doubt we can play at this level. We've just got to keep getting better, but we've learned a lot today."
The Spartans continue their North Carolina road trip on Sunday with a match at No. 28 North Carolina State at 1 p.m., and then an 8 p.m. date with North Carolina A&T.
