For MSU, it was their third overtime game of the season. MSU goalkeeper, Sierra Patton, recorded her fourth career start in the matchup against American. Patton, a Redshirt Sophomore from Chelsea, Michigan, achieved a career-high 12 saves in the loss.
"Our goalkeeper, Sierra Patton, did huge things for us. She got a save right at the half that kept us tied heading into halftime. Sierra [Patton] came up big in some critical times and played a solid game for us in goal," explained MSU head coach Helen Knull.
The Spartans struggled to convert offensively, generating five shots on goal and failing to score on their four penalty corner opportunities.
"To American's credit, they played a solid game. I'm happy with how we played, but I'm disappointed with the outcome," noted Knull.
The Eagles recorded 13 shots on goal, along with 9 penalty corners. American's winning goal came from a conversion on a penalty corner by Senior Grace Wilson and was assisted by Senior Rebecca Treharne.
Next weekend, the Spartans head to Kent, Ohio, to face the Kent State Golden Flashes at 12 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a matchup against the Richmond Spiders at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
"For us it's two more games, two more teams in different jerseys, and it's two more games we want to win. It's another important week of practice. We're going to get focused, focus on our game, see what we have to improve on, and get ready for another road trip this coming weekend," concluded Knull.
