EAST LANSING, Mich. - Caleb Rhynard of the Michigan State men's cross country team has been named the Big Ten Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week, announced by the conference office on Tuesday. He is taking home the honor for the second time in his career and is the third Spartan to earn the award in 2014, joining men's teammate Nick Moon and women's teammate Rachele Schulist.
Rhynard, a 2013 All-American for Michigan State, turned in another great performance over the weekend at the Minnesota Roy Griak Invitational, finishing third overall with a time of 24:49, tops among all Big Ten competitors. The junior native of Shepherd, Mich., also finished third at Oregon's Bill Dellinger Invitational (24:28) and the MSU Spartan Invitational (24:40) earlier this season.
Thus far this year, Rhynard has helped lead Michigan State into the Top-30 of the Men's Cross Country National Coaches' Poll in addition to a fourth place ranking in the NCAA Great Lakes Region. The Spartans recorded a runner-up finish at the Dellinger Invitational on Sept. 5 and a fourth place finish at Saturday's Griak meet, finishing just 11 points behind first-place Southern Utah.
