Spartans Finish Day One of Wildcat Invite

Sept. 26, 2014 EVANSTON, Ill. - The Michigan State women's tennis team finished its first day of the Wildcat Invitational on Friday at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center. The Spartans tallied five singles victories along with two doubles victories.
"There was a lot of good competition there today, I think it will be a great learning experience going forward," said head coach Simone Jardim. "We are excited to go out there tomorrow and get back out there."
In the Draw A singles at the Wildcat Invitational, sophomore Athena Trouillot defeated Nina Nagode of Florida International, 0-6, 6-2, 6-1. Trouillot was defeated by Jasmin Kling of DePaul, 6-1, 6-1.
Freshman Lexi Baylis fell to Edmee Morin-Kougoucheff of Kentucky 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, and Christiana Brigante of Oklahoma, 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Aslina Chua was defeated by No. 24 Yana Koroleva of Florida International, 6-3, 6-4. Chua then beat Amber Washington of Pitt, 6-1, 7-5. Sophomore Erin Faulkner defeated Olivia Myers of Western Michigan 7-6 (8), 7-5. Faulkner then fell to Jillian Rooney of Northwestern, 7-5, 6-4.
Five Spartans competed in the Draw B singles bracket on day one. The Spartans faced some tough competition as sophomore Emmy Virkus fell to Keti Mebuke of Illinois-Chicago 6-1, 6-1, and Ann Pepper of Oklahoma, 6-1, 6-2. Junior Emily Meyers lost to Nerma Caluk of Florida International, 6-2, 6-0, but bounced back to defeat Eastern Michigan's Maria Paula Ribero 6-1, 6-0. Senior Hilary Hager was defeated by Northwestern's Erin Larner 6-0, 6-2, and Kate Lanier of Kentucky 6-1, 6-3. Freshman Colleen O'Brien was defeated by Rheeya Doshi of Northwestern, 6-1, 6-7 (3), 7-5, and Bianca Zuzu of UIC, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Freshman Allie Baer notched a victory over Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna of Eastern Michigan, 6-3, 7-6 (6). Baer then fell to Callie Frey of Pitt, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (8).
The sophomore duo of Faulkner and Trouillot got the ball rolling for the Green and White in Draw A doubles taking down Aleck and Myers from Western Michigan, 8-5. Baer and senior Catherine Parenteau also competed in the Draw A doubles bracket falling to Chumney and Brigante of Oklahoma, 8-4.
Three doubles teams competed for MSU in the Draw B doubles bracket. Baylis and Meyers took down Callie Frey of Pitt and Ann-Sophie Hahn of UIC, 8-4. O'Brien and Virkus were defeated by Florida International's Brozovich and Briceno 8-4, and Chua and Hager fell to Devine and Melrose of Oklahoma, 8-1.
The Spartans are back tomorrow at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center at 10 a.m. ET for day two of the Wildcat Invitational.
