
Spartans Sweep In-State Rivals

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team started off the 2015 season 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans tallied a 5-2 victory over Eastern Michigan and a 7-0 victory over Oakland. MSU captured 10 singles victories and four doubles victories on the afternoon.
"I think we are a young team and we just learning," said head coach Simone Jardim. "We had some good results today, enjoying themselves out here goes a long way. They did what they had to do and got the win."
MSU took two victories from Eastern Michigan in doubles play. At No. 2 doubles, the freshman duo of Allie Baer and Aslina Chua defeated EMU's Gogvadze and Ribero, 6-4. The team of junior Emily Meyers and freshman Lexi Baylis were victorious at No. 3 doubles, defeating the Eagles Friedrichs and Barcelo, 6-3.
At No. 1 singles, sophomore Erin Faulkner downed the Eagles Klara Supejova, 6-1, 6-4.
Lexi Baylis found herself in a tight match at No. 3 singles. Baylis came back in the first set from a 3-0, and 4-1 deficit to force a tiebreaker where she defeated Andrea Martinovska, 6-1, 7-6 (2).
Sophomore Athena Trouillot made quick work of Remu Sharma at No. 5 singles, downing Sharma 6-0, 6-3.
Emily Meyers notched the Spartans last victory at No. 6 singles. Meyers defeated Anna Veleva, 6-2, 6-1.
The Spartans came out hot against the Golden Grizzlies of Oakland. MSU took six victories at singles and two victories at doubles play.
Erin Faulkner earned her second singles victory of the day. Faulkner defeated Sabourin of Oakland, 6-1, 6-0.
At No. 2 singles, freshman Aslina Chua avenged her loss earlier in the afternoon, downing Oakland's Celis, 6-0, 6-1.
Lexi Baylis came back from a 0-3 start in the first set to win the first set 7-6.
Athena Trouillot was victorious again in singles play, this time defeating Elizabeth Guy of Oakland, 6-1, 6-1.
Freshman Colleen O'Brien saw her first dual meet action at MSU on Sunday evening. O'Brien earned a 6-2, 6-2, victory over Oakland's Hemond-Hall.
Sophomore Anna Zelechonok finished the Spartans sweep at No. 6 singles, beating Juliana Guevara, 6-0, 6-1.
The Spartans won two doubles victories over Oakland. The No. 1 doubles team of Allie Baer and Emily Meyers won, 6-2. At No. 3 doubles Colleen O'Brien and senior Julianne Gruber won, 6-1. The team of Anna Zelechonok and senior Hilary Hager were leading 4-3, before the match was called.
The women's tennis team returns back to action on Sunday as it travels California for the 2015 ITA Kick-Off Weekend to face the host No. 7 California Golden Bears.
