No. 5 Virginia, Duke on Tap for Rowers

East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State heads to Charlottesville, Virginia this weekend to take on No. 5 Virginia and Duke on Lake Monticello. No. 17 Syracuse is at the event as well, and will race both the Cavaliers and Blue Devils. The Spartans, who sit just outside the CRCA Top 20 poll, continue to work their way into consideration for the NCAA Tournament field, as well as a higher seeding for the upcoming Big Ten Championships.
Both the Spartans and Blue Devils competed last weekend at the Clemson Invitational; while Virginia competed in a Big Ten/ACC Challenge event at Michigan. Duke finished behind MSU in all their races last weekend, and the Spartans beat Duke in all boat classes except for the varsity eight in the opening weekend of the season at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational.
The Cavaliers defeated UM in all but the varsity eight (losing by a half-length) and second novice eight races, and to Ohio State in both the varsity eight and second varsity eight events (both by a length), but winning all other boat classes.
MSU also raced Virginia in that opening-weekend regatta, falling to the No. 3 Cavaliers in each race. The Spartans feel that they have made progress over the last month, and are looking at closing the margins from the earlier races this season.
Racing begins at 8 a.m. and the races will go off on 10-minute centers; there will be a mid-day break, with racing resuming at 1 p.m. for the afternoon session. The morning session will feature MSU vs. Virginia and Duke/Syracuse facing off, then the Spartans taking on Duke in the afternoon session while Syracuse takes on the host Cavaliers.
