TAMPA, Fla. - In its third match away from East Lansing this season, the Michigan State women's tennis team swept Niagara, 7-0. The match was held on a neutral site on the outdoor courts of the University of South Florida's campus. MSU upped its season record to 11-2.
"It was a good first match for us," head coach Simone Jardim said. "We were able to adjust and get used to playing outside quickly. So far it has been a great spring break as we have been able to play a lot of outdoor tennis and deal with a different environment."
The Spartans faced little resistance all day from the Purple Eagles. MSU swept all three doubles matches, marking the 11th time in 13 matches MSU has won the doubles point. The Spartans are 10-1 when winning the initial point.
All six singles starters, Marina Bohrer, Erin Faulkner, Emily Meyers, Olga Chernova, Athena Trouillot, and Julianne Gruber breezed to straight set wins. Of the 12 sets won by the Spartans, seven of those were won by a final of either 6-0 or 6-1 in favor of the Green and White.
Bohrer Sets New Record
With her singles win today, senior co-captain Marina Bohrer set a new Michigan State singles record by claiming her 65th career win. She was previously tied at 64 wins with Christine Bader and Jessica Baron but now she stands alone on top. Bohrer improved her overall season record to 13-4 and her spring dual record to 11-1. All-time in her Spartan career, Bohrer is 65-39 in singles play.
MSU returns to the courts in Tampa, Fla., on Friday when it faces Mercer at 10 a.m.
