EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State junior defender Mary Kathryn Fiebernitz has been named to the 2014 women's soccer All-Big Ten team, it was announced by the conference office on Tuesday (Nov. 4). Fiebernitz was a second team selection, while rookie forward Jamie Cheslik was named to the All-Freshman team.
Fiebernitz ranked third on the team in points with 10 (4g, 2a) and started all 19 games. The always-steady defender has been a mainstay in the Spartan lineup over the last two seasons as it her second consecutive All-Big Ten second team selection.
All four of Fiebernitz's goals came in wins for the Green and White this fall. Three of her four goals came via penalty kick; she is 6-for-6 on penalty kicks since 2013.
Cheslik led MSU in scoring with 20 points and eight goals. Both totals are tied for ninth in the league. The native of Northville didn't take long to find her place in the Spartan offense as she registered a point in each of the first four games and produced five goals and one assist in the first seven games of 2014.
Cheslik, who started all 19 games, had game-winning goals against Cal-State Fullerton, Oakland and Purdue.
The Big Ten also recognized 14 Sportsmanship Award honorees - one from each school. Senior Nicole Caruso was the Spartans' honoree. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Caruso started all 21 games for the Spartans this fall.
