Fiebernitz Named to All -Big Ten Second Team
Junior defender Mary Kathryn Fiebernitz was named to the 2014 women's soccer All-Big Ten team announced by the conference office Nov. 4.
Fiebernitz ranked third on the team in points with 10 (4g, 2a) and started all 19 games. The always-steady defender has been a mainstay in the Spartan lineup over the last two seasons as it her second consecutive All-Big Ten second team selection.
All four of Fiebernitz's goals came in wins for the Green and White this fall. Three of her four goals came via penalty kick; she is 6-for-6 on penalty kicks since 2013.
Cheslik Named to Big Ten All-Freshman Team
Freshman forward Jamie Cheslik was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team Nov.4 by the conference office. Cheslik led MSU in scoring with 20 points and eight goals. Both totals are tied for ninth in the league. The native of Northville didn't take long to find her place in the Spartan offense as she registered a point in each of the first four games and produced five goals and one assist in the first seven games of 2014.
Cheslik, who started all 19 games, had game-winning goals against Cal-State Fullerton, Oakland and Purdue.
Looking Ahead to 2015
The Spartans will return 29 players from the 2014 team, 21 of whom have played in at least two games to this point. MSU will also return its top-three scorers, Jamie Cheslik, Allyson Krause and Mary Katherine Fiebernitz, who accounted for 16 of the teams 24 goals and 42 of the teams 72 points.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Gabrielle Gauruder will look to replace departing senior Courtney Clem. Gauruder saw brief action this season, appearing in two games and making two saves.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The women's soccer team concluded its 2014 campaign on Oct. 31 at Indiana, losing 2-0 to the Hoosiers. Michigan State ended the season with a 3-9-1 Big Ten record and a 9-9-1 overall record.
Here are a few notes on the 2014 season…
- The Spartans began the season by winning back-to-back games on the road in California, downing San Diego State 3-1, and Cal State Fullerton 1-0. Freshman Jamie Cheslik made an immediate impact scoring goals in her first-two college games. The win over Cal State Fullerton marked the first time the Titans suffered a home loss since Sept. 24, 2013.
- Goalkeeper Courtney Clem was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the week for the weeks of Aug. 27, and Sept. 3 for her part in the four straight victories.
- MSU continued its hot play winning its home opener, 3-0, on Aug. 29, then taking down in-state rival Oakland, 1-0, on Sept. 2 on a last minute goal by Cheslik.
- The Spartans closed out their non-conference season winning 3-1 on Sept. 5 against IPFW and defeating Western Michigan in overtime 3-2 on Sept. 7 on a goal from junior midfielder Allyson Krause.
- Michigan State finished the non-conference season allowing just four goals in six games and a perfect 6-0-0 record.
- Spartans began Big Ten play by dropping an overtime heartbreaker at home against No. 9 Wisconsin on Sept. 12. MSU would go on to lose a string of one-goal games until finally picking up their first Big Ten win, 3-1 at home against Nebraska on Oct. 10. The win propelled the Spartans to wins over Purdue, 2-0 on Oct.11, and Ohio State, 2-1 on Oct.16.
- Michigan State dropped its final four matches, eliminating the Spartans from postseason contention.
- The Spartans finished the regular season ranked first in the conference in saves with 121, 20 better than second place Minnesota.
- Other notable Spartans on the conference leaderboard included senior forward Paige Wester, who finished tied for seventh in assists with seven. Freshman Jamie Cheslik also finished in the top-10 in points with 20 and goals with eight.
