Women's Tennis Finishes Day Two of Akron Invitational

AKRON, Ohio - The Michigan State women's tennis team continued their winning ways on the second day of the Akron Invitational. MSU finished the day with six wins in singles play and one win in doubles play.
"I am very proud of our singles play today," said head coach Simone Jardim. "We continue to improve every day, we can't wait to get out their tomorrow."
The Spartans started the day in doubles play against the Big Red of Cornell. Cornell came away victorious in all three matches. The team of senior Hilary Hager and freshman Colleen O'Brien defeated the team of Geier and Bessmertnaya of Akron, 8-4.
MSU finished the day in singles competition against the host Akron Zips. The Spartans finished the round coming away winner of all six matches.
The pair of sophomores were victorious today, as No. 1 singles Erin Faulkner defeated Akron's Karolina Maksimava, 7-5, 7-5, and Athena Trouillot defeated the Zips Martina Zerbola,6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-5.
At No. 3 singles, freshman Aslina Chua defeated Ariadna Blinova of Akron, 6-2, 6-0.
Freshman Lexi Baylis came away victorious at No. 4 singles defeating Akron's Maria Bessmertnaya, 6-0, 6-0.
No. 5 continued the winning ways for MSU as junior Emily Meyers beat Akron's Shannon Newnes, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.
Finishing the day O'Brien defeated Sophia Geier of Akron, 6-4, 6-1.
The Spartans will finish the Akron Invitational tomorrow at 9 a.m. as they take on Cornell at the LaTuchie Tennis Center. MSU will also take on West Virginia in doubles play at noon.
