Spartans Zip Through Day One of Akron Invitational

AKRON, Ohio - The Michigan State women's tennis team started strong on the first day of the Akron Invitational. The Spartans tallied four singles victories over West Virginia and two doubles victories over Akron.
"Overall it was a good first day," said head coach Simone Jardim. "We had to make adjustments coming inside, but I'm certain that we will keep improving as we play more matches."
MSU started its day in singles play against the Mountaineers of West Virginia, winning four of six matches. Senior Catherine Parenteau notched a victory at No. 3 singles defeating West Virginia's Ikttesh Chahel, 6-4, 6-3. A duo of Spartan freshmen notched a pair of victories as Aslina Chua defeated Carolina Lewis of West Virginia, at No. 4 singles 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (9) and Lexi Baylis at No. 5 singles, defeating the Mountaineers' Yvon Martinez, 6-1, 6-3. Junior Emily Meyers was also victorious at No. 6 singles taking down Hailey Barrett, 6-1, 6-1.
The Spartans finished the day in doubles play, taking on the host Akron Zips. MSU came away victorious in two of its three matches against the Zips. At No. 2 doubles the pair of Parenteau and sophomore Athena Trouillot defeated Akron's Blinova and Newnes, 8-3. The team of Meyers and Baylis defeated the Zips pair of Geier and Bessmertnaya at No. 3 doubles, 8-0.
Michigan State returns back to action tomorrow for day two of the Akron Invitational. The Spartans take on Cornell in double at noon and Akron in singles play at 1 p.m. at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.
