Spartans Finish First Day of Midwest Regionals

URBANA, Ill. - The Michigan State women's tennis team won three matches on Thursday at the Midwest Regionals. MSU came away victorious in both of its first round matches and won one second round match.
"It was a pretty good day," said associate head coach Tyler Faulkner. "We started off the first round winning two matches. In the second round we lost some very close matches. It will be a good learning experience for us going forward."
Junior Emily Meyers started off the day for the Green and White with a victory over Wisconsin's Kelsey Gambreau, 7-6 (2), 6-2. Meyers finished the day against Alexa Brandt of Bradley, where she lost in a tight match, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (5).
Freshman Lexi Baylis celebrated her birthday in winning fashion, finishing the day a winner of two matches. Baylis started off taking down Cleveland State's Mathilde Orange, 6-4, 6-0. Baylis finished the day beating Kadi Ilves of Illinois State, 6-1, 6-2. Baylis will face Ani Gogvadze of Eastern Michigan.
In the second round, sophomore Athena Trouillot fell to the host Illinois's Madie Baillon, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Finishing the day, senior Catherine Parenteau fell to Jerrika Boone of Illinois, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.
The Spartans return to action tomorrow morning at the Aktins Tennis Center. MSU will start the day in the third round of the singles qualifier draw. Doubles competition will start in the afternoon as the sophomore duo of Erin Faulkner and Trouillot has a first round bye, Parenteau and freshman Aslina Chua take on Bradley's Brandt and Thai, and the team of Baylis and Meyers will face Illinois's Jamieson and Hilton.
