EAST LANSING, Mich. - Seventh-ranked Mike McClure extended his winning streak to three with a 5-1 decision over Nick Ruggear at heavyweight, but the Michigan State wrestling team fell to three-time defending national champion and top-ranked Penn State, 42-3, Friday night at Jenison Field House.
"That's a very good and talented team with a lot of depth," said MSU head coach Tom Minkel. "They're very well coached. But at the same time, I thought our kids for the most part competed pretty hard. McClure did what he usually does at heavyweight, which is find a way to get the job done. That was a nice win for him. I also thought Nick Trimble did an extraordinary job in the last match (at 149 pounds). He just continues to fight and get after it."
The Nittany Lions recorded four falls in the dual as they improved to 12-0 on the season and 6-0 in Big Ten action. Penn State's lineup on Friday featured seven ranked wrestlers, including six in the top 10.
In the first bout of the dual, Roger Wildmo batted fourth-ranked Dylan Alton to an 8-3 decision at 157 pounds, but PSU took a 20-0 lead into intermission on the strength of pins at 165 pounds by No. 1 David Taylor, at 184 by No. 2 Ed Ruth, and at 197 by No. 7 Jordan McIntosh.
In the first match after intermission, McClure got MSU on the board with a 5-1 win over Ruggear. After a scoreless first period, Ruggear took a 1-0 lead with an escape in the second. McClure quickly tied it at 1 with an escape of his own to start the third.
The fifth-year senior from Holland, Mich., scored his first takedown with 1:07 left in the match after Ruggear held off a shot and battled for nearly 30 seconds before succumbing to the two points. With 15 seconds left, Ruggear was called for stalling, and McClure compiled 1:10 of riding time to come away with the four-point victory.
"You knew it wasn't just going to be a one shot deal - Mike was going to keep coming until he got the takedown," said Minkel. "I don't think any of us thought it was going to take five or six shots to get the takedown, but he stayed with it, and that was the deciding factor in the match."
In the final match of the dual at 149 pounds, Nick Trimble rallied from a six-point deficit against Andrew Alton and managed to cut his margin to 9-5 with a takedown at the 1:20 mark in the third period. Trimble nearly got Alton on his back in the closing seconds of the bout, but Alton fought off Trimble just long enough to earn 9-5 win.
Michigan State (5-9, 0-6 Big Ten) will hit the road to close out the Big Ten dual season next weekend. The Spartans will face No. 12 Ohio State in Massillon, Ohio, on Friday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m., then will travel to Bloomington, Ind., to take on Indiana Sunday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m.
