Spartan Wrestling Falls to No. 6 Illinois, 26-13

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Michigan State wrestling lost to No. 6 Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Huff Hall, 26-13. Dan Osterman recorded a fall at 149 pounds and Curran Jacobs defeated No. 10 Jordan Blanton at 174 pounds.
"This is the first time that I thought we really fought as a team," head coach Tom Minkel said. "From top to bottom it was a real fight. It was an important step in our development as a team."
The dual match started at 125 pounds and Eric Olanowski lost a 15-6 major decision to No. 5 Jesse Delgado of Illinois. At 133 pounds, Terry Turner lost by fall to No. 5 B.J. Futrell in 2:37.
Brian Gibbs lost a 24-10 major decision to Daryl Thomas of Illinois 141 pounds.
Just 30 seconds into the 149-pound match Dan Osterman pinned Eric Terrazas of Illinois, giving the Spartans their first win of the dual.
No. 13 Anthony Jones Jr. defeated Jackson Morse of Illinois with a 16-5 major decision. Jones had six takedowns, three near-fall points and added riding time to cut the Illini lead to 14-10.
At 165 pounds, David Cheza lost a close 9-7 decision to No. 10 Conrad Polz of Illinois. Cheza was down 9-4 after the first two periods and managed an escape and a takedown in the third, but it wasn't enough to close the gap.
Curran Jacobs got Michigan State (3-6, 1-4 Big Ten) back on the board with a 7-3 decision over No. 10 Jordan Blanton of Illinois (11-2, 3-2 Big Ten) at 174 pounds. Jacobs didn't give up a takedown and had three takedowns of his own to secure his second straight win over a ranked wrestler. Jacobs defeated No. 11 Lee Munster of Northwestern, 3-1, Friday, Jan. 20.
Senior Ian Hinton lost a 9-3 decision to Tony Dallago of Illinois at 184 pounds and Nick McDiarmid lost a 13-6 decision to No. 16 Mario Gonzales at 197 pounds.
In the heavyweight matchup, No. 10 Michael McClure lost in sudden victory to Patrick Walker of Illinois, 3-1.
Up next the Spartans host Nebraska on Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. and then head to Michigan on Jan. 29 for a 2 p.m. dual.
