EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team fell to seventh-ranked Nebraska, 27-8, Friday night at Jenison Field House. Eric Olanowski began the dual with a dominating 15-0 technical fall victory at 125 pounds, and the Spartans led 8-7 after four matches following Dan Osterman's win in the 149 weight class, but Nebraska won the final six matches of the dual to claim the victory. Four of the 10 matches were decided by just one point.
"That's probably the hardest that we've wrestled in 10 consecutive matches," head coach Tom Minkel said. "Nebraska is a heck of a team. Honestly, I felt that we fought hard every minute of every match."
The Spartans jumped out to a 5-0 lead after Olanowski earned a 15-0 technical fall over Shawn Nagel of Nebraska in 4:09. Olanowski dominated without giving up any points and earned four near-falls and two takedowns in the 125-pound match. It marked Olanowski's first technical fall of the season and the third of his career.
The Huskers (13-1, 4-1 Big Ten) rallied to win the next two matches as No. 19 Ridge Kiley defeated Brandon Fifield at 133 pounds, 7-3, while Jake Sueflohn earned a major decision over Brian Gibbs at 141, 13-3.
Osterman put MSU back on top, 8-7, after edging Brandon Wilbourn at 149 pounds, 3-2. Following a scoreless first period, Wilbourn took a 1-0 lead with an escape early in the second, but Osterman opened the third with a reversal before letting Wilbourn escape to tie it at 2. With time winding down in the final period, Osterman was awarded a point with 40 seconds remaining as Wilbourn was called for stalling, giving Osterman the victory, his 19th of the season.
In a battle of ranked wrestlers in the 157-pound weight class, No. 8 James Green of Nebraska held off No. 12 Anthony Jones Jr., 3-2. Green got an early takedown 20 seconds into the first period, which proved to be the difference. Jones notched an escape later in the first and tied it with another escape to start out the second; however, Green answered with his own escape in the third to reclaim the lead. Jones attempted several shots down the stretch, and Green was called for a stalling warning with six seconds left, but it wasn't enough as Jones dropped the 3-2 decision.
Following intermission, the Huskers claimed the final five matches. No. 6 Robert Kokesh beat David Cheza at 165 pounds, 16-4, and 11th-ranked Curran Jacobs was upset by Tyler Koehn, 5-2, at 174. In the 184-pound matchup, seventh-ranked Josh Inhel recorded a major decision over Ian Hinton, 11-2.
The dual ended with back-to-back 3-2 decisions, both in Nebraska's favor. James Nakashima topped Nick McDiarmid at 197 pounds and No. 9 Tucker Lane defeated Steve Andrus at heavyweight.
The Spartans (3-7, 1-5 Big Ten) return to action Sunday, Jan. 29 to take on No. 10 Michigan in Ann Arbor at 2 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena. The dual will be streamed live for a fee at BTN.com.
