Women's Tennis Completes First Day of Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team completed the first day of the Spartan Invitational on Friday, tallying two doubles wins and a total of four singles victories. Freshman Julianne Gruber went undefeated in singles play, going 2-0 in the Draw C Singles bracket. The Spartans also saw success in the Draw B Doubles with the duo of freshman Hilary Hager and redshirt junior Dana Guentert. Sophomores Olga Chernova and Jennifer Yen both posted wins to round out top play for the Spartans.
Hager and Guentert paired up to defeat Villjuan and Tachovsky of Louisville, 8-5. Chernova and Yen fought hard for a win, edging Kuvakina and Berestetska of Akron, 9-8 (3). In Draw A Doubles, junior Amy Barton and Gruber fell to Kovaleva and Craig of the University of Illinois-Chicago. Pere and Golder of Purdue dropped the tandem of junior Nicole Herzog and sophomore Katarina Lingl, 9-7.
In Draw A Singles action, Barton fell in the first round to Dennis of IPFW, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4). The junior was able to bounce back the next match and down Villajuan of Louisville. 6-0, 6-1. Sophomore Olga Chernova fell in both her matches, losing to Fisher of Marquette, 6-3, 6-3 and Henestrosa of IPFW, 6-4, 6-2.
During the Draw B Singles matches, Herzog notched a victory over Forsyth of IPFW, 6-1, 6-0. She then dropped her match to Miller from Louisville 6-2, 6-4. Lingl fell to Pere of Purdue, 6-1, 7-6 (6). Gruber tallied two wins in the Draw C Singles, dropping Huck of IPFW, 6-2, 6-0 and recording a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Sharples of UIC. Hager was defeated in her match against Craig of UIC, 6-2, 6-4.
The invitational continues with day two tomorrow (Saturday) at 9 a.m. Due to the MSU home football game, matches will be held at both East Lansing High School and Mason High School.
