SHENZHEN, China - Michigan State junior Caroline Powers shot the lowest score for Team USA at the World University Games with a 1-over 289 (78-71-71-69) to tie for sixth on the individual leaderboard. Powers helped the United States to a third-place finish overall out of the 21 countries competing in the event to win the bronze medal.
Although Powers started out the tournament with a 78, she bounced back by carding back-to-back rounds of 71, then finished with a 3-under 69, which was the third-lowest score in the fourth round.
Lin Tzuchi of Chinese Taipei claimed medalist honors with an 8-under 280 (71-69-70-70). Chinese Taipei also won the team competition with a score of 558. China finished in second with a 580, while Team USA posted a 581.
Each country participating in the tournament could take up to five players: three played as the team, counting the best two scores each day over a total of 72 holes for the tournament, while the other two played for medalist honors as individuals.
Powers was one of five collegiate golfers representing the United States. She was joined by Catherine O'Donnell of North Carolina, Tessa Teachman of LSU, Emily Talley of Colorado, and Brooke Beeler of TCU.
In just her second season in East Lansing, Powers burst onto the national scene in 2010-11 as one of the elite players in the country while establishing a new standard of excellence for the Michigan State women's golf program.
The Bowling Green, Ohio, product set a school record with her 73.53 scoring average and her sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships was the best-ever showing by a Spartan. Powers finished in the Top 10 at seven tournaments, including the last four in a row, and won her first collegiate tournament at the Lady Buckeye Invitational on April 17. In addition, she led the team in scoring in nine of the team's 11 events.
For her outstanding season, Powers was a first-team All-Big Ten selection and garnered NGCA honorable mention All-America as well as All-Region honors.
Powers and the Spartans begin the 2011-12 season at the "Mo" Morial Invitational in College Station, Texas, Sept. 11-13.
