EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team was defeated at home today, April 9, against the Penn State Nittany Lions 4-3 at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Facility. The No. 70 Spartans are now 12-7 overall and 1-5 in the Big Ten.
The Green and White started off strong by taking the doubles point by winning in the No. 1 and 2 positions. Sophomore Amy Barton and freshman Marina Bohrer took down Bidard and Simidian in the No. 1 spot 8-2, while sophomore Nicole Herzog and senior Whitney Wilson defeated Sandor and Perrota, 8-6. The freshman duo of Olga Chernova and Katarina Lingl were defeated in the No. 3 spot by Januskova and Zobeideh, 8-5.
The Spartans took points in the No. 3 and 6 positions in singles play, as Bohrer took down Sandor in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, and sophomore Dana Guentert topped Perrotta 6-2, 4-1 (ret.). In the No. 1 position, Barton fell to Januskova 6-2, 6-1, and freshman Valentina Rusakova was defeated by Simidan in the No. 2 position 6-0, 6-4. The back and forth match was decided at the No. 5 position, where Herzog suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Marie Bedard in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Spartans will look to redeem the close loss tomorrow (April 10), when they host the Buckeyes of Ohio State at the MSU Indoor Facility at 11 a.m.
