
Men's Tennis Tops Western Michigan, 5-2

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team earned its 14th non-conference win today with a 5-2 win over Western Michigan at the West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo, Mich., on Wednesday, April 6. The Green and White are now 14-6 on the season, and ranked 60th in the ITA weekly polls.
The Spartans earned the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and 2 spots, and earned the remaining four points throughout the singles lineup. Seniors John Stratton and Jason Norville defeated Calderone and Komada in a close match at the No. 1 position, 9-8 (7-0), while freshman Aaron Pfister and junior Austin Brooks earned the victory at the No. 2 spot, taking down Cullen and Olivarez, 8-4.
In singles play, sophomore Denis Bogatov defeated Komada in the No. 1 slot, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0, 10-7, while junior Ron Hulewicz earned a victory in the No. 3 position in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. The freshmen duo of Pfister and Drew Lied both earned victories, as Pifster took down Blomberg in the No. 4 position, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, and Lied defeated Noel, 6-1, 2-6, 6-0, in the No. 6 position. Pfister continued his unbeaten streak in dual singles matches, and is now 17-0 on the spring.
Junior Austin Brooks fell in the longest match of the afternoon, as Michael Calderone outlasted him, 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 7-6(7-3). Stratton fell to Cullen in the No. 5 position, 6-3, 6-0.
The Spartans return to conference action this weekend as they travel to face Ohio State on Friday, April 8 at 3 p.m., followed by a visit to Penn State on Sunday, April 10 at 3 p.m.
