EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's tennis sophomores Amy Barton and Dana Guentert were both honored by the Big Ten Conference this evening at the conference's year-end banquet. Barton was a Second Team All-Big Ten honoree and Guentert was named the team's recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
Barton has been a key player for the Spartans this year, seeing all of her action at the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles spots. She has accumulated an overall record of 12-9 at the top singles position. Barton posted Big Ten regular-season victories over Indiana and Illinois. Barton's singles victory over Leslie Hureau clinched the Spartan's lone conference victory over the Hoosiers. She was also ranked No. 121 in singles by the ITA for the week of April 1st.
Barton becomes MSU's first All-Big Ten honoree since Christine Bader was named to the first team in 2008.
In doubles, Barton has paired up with freshman Marina Bohrer to post a team-best 16-8 record at the No.1 position. Along with being ranked No. 40, the tandem has gone 5-4 in Big Ten play. They posted an impressive 8-5 victory over No. 14 Brooke Bolender and Denise Muresan of Michigan earlier this spring.
Guentert was honored as the team's recipient of the 2010 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. Each athlete chosen for this honor has not only demonstrated success on the court, but has stood out in the classroom as well as in the community as well. This is the second time Guentert has received this award. She was awarded the accolade after her freshman season in 2009.
The sophomore has made her mark out on the court for the Spartans this season, going 12-10 overall in singles play. Seeing the majority of her time in both the No. 5 and 6 singles positions, Guentert has gone 4-5 in conference play. She also posted an 8-1 record in doubles and went 6-0 in non-conference matches. Guentert and partner sophomore Nicole Herzog went a perfect 5-0 in the No. 3 doubles position.
