
Spartans topped by Irish, 5-2

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team fell in its first match of the season, as it was topped by No. 25 Notre Dame 5-2 in its second match of the weekend.
The Irish earned the doubles point by earning victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 postions. Fitzgerald and Talmadge took down sophomore Denis Bogatov and freshman Drew Lied, 8-3, in No. 2 slot, while senior Austin Brooks and freshman Aaron Pfister were defeated by Watt and Andrews, 8-6, in the No. 3 spot. Seniors Jason Norville and John Stratton earned an 8-6 victory in the No. 1 spot by taking down Havens and Davis.
In singles actions, MSU tallied two victories, as junior Ron Hulewicz defeated Havens, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 2 spot and Pfister beat Davis, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 5 position. Bogatov fell in the No. 1 spot to Watt, 7-5, 6-4. Brooks and Stratton both suffered narrow defeats, as Stahl defeated Brooks, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, in the No. 3 slot and Stratton fell to Andrews, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4), in the No. 4 spot. In the No. 6 slot, Lied fell to Anderson 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-4.
The Spartans hit the road for the first time this season next weekend when they travel to Muncie, Ind. to face Ball State on Saturday, February 19 at 1 p.m.
