
Pfister, Lied Advance to Semifinals at Big Ten Indoors

IOWA CITY, IA - Sophomores Aaron Pfister and Drew Lied both earned two victories Sunday afternoon in the singles main draw to advance to the final round of four, which will be played Monday. Pfister topped Petrone of Michigan 6-4, 6-4, before defeating Will Kendall of Indiana with a 6-1, 6-2 decision to earn a spot in the semi-final match. Pfister is set to face Dierckx of Iowa at 9 a.m. Monday.
Lied earned his first victory of the afternoon over Jack Larsen of Wisconsin in a hard fought 6-4, 7-5 win, before defeating Michael Zhu of Michigan with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 score. Lied will face Stephen Hoh of the Fighting Illini Monday, also at 9 a.m., for a chance to play in the finals match.
Three other Spartans earned victories on Sunday in the back draw, as seniors Ronnie Hulewicz and Austin Brooks and Will Davis all notched multiple victories, with Hulewicz advancing to the final four. Brooks earned a pair of comeback wins, as he defeated Smith of Northwestern 5-7, 7-5 (12-10) topped Tasic of Indiana 2-6, 6-3 (10-7) and then fell to Ramirez of Minnesota, 6-4, 6-2. Davis earned two victories over the Hawkeye home team, as he defeated Swank 7-6, 6-2 in the second round before topping Estenborro 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinal.
Hulewicz earned his first victory over Franks of Michigan 6-0, 6-4, before topping Spector of Northwestern 6-3, 6-3. The senior's final victory came against Hawkins of Purdue 6-3, 6-1 to earn a spot in the final four and a match against Ramirez of Minnesota in the back draw finals at 9 a.m. Monday morning.
Junior Denis Bogatov and freshman Gijs Linders also competed back in draw play, but were topped as Bogatov was defeated by Buzzi of Michigan 6-1, 6-3, and Linders fell to Welnetz of Penn State 6-4, 6-2.
