EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's golf team placed third at the 27th annual Mary Fossum Invitational, which concluded Sunday at Forest Akers West Golf Course on the MSU campus. Notre Dame claimed the 11-team tournament title with a team score of 890 (298-295-297), while Kent State (301-290-304--895) edged MSU (297-298-301--896) by one stroke to take second. The third-place finish by the Spartans snaps their five-tournament winning streak in the event.
Notre Dame's Nicole Zhang shattered the tournament record by shooting a 9-under 207 (69-67-71) to win medalist honors. The previous record was 214, set in 2007 by MSU's Laura Kueny and tied in 2009 by James Madison's Nicole Sakamoto.
"We're just so proud we have the ability to introduce Mary at her tournament and that she's able to be here and hand out the trophies," said MSU head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll. "That means a lot to us."
Sophomore Caroline Powers led MSU for the tournament by carding a 4-over 220 (71-74-75), good for a career-best third-place finish.
Senior Aimee Neff and junior Lindsey Solberg also placed in the top 10, at sixth and eighth, respectively. Neff shot a team-best 74 during Sunday's final round to total 223 (+7), while Solberg finished at 9-over with a 225 (77-70-78).
Michelle Bowles tied for 15th place with a 14-over 230 (76-78-76) and true freshman Christine Meier, playing in her first career Fossum, tied for 28th with a 19-over 235 (81-78-76).
"We have some things to work on," Slobodnik-Stoll said. "We have some talented players on our team, and now we just have to show that a little bit better. It's disappointing on your home golf course to be counting 77s and 78s (in your team score) because we know that our kids are so much better and they're capable of shooting the scores, but it's part of athletics and it's part of learning."
Four Spartans played as individuals in the tournament, including Natalie Brehm, who recorded her first career top-10 finish. Brehm tied for 10th overall by carding a 226 (77-73-76).
Junior Shannon Warner tied for 12th place with a 227 (78-73-76) and Maddi Massa (79-76-80) and Liz Nagel (79-76-80) each tied for 28th with a 235.
The Spartans return to action Oct. 8-10 where they will look to defend their title at the Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
