EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 5 Michigan State field hockey team finished off their weekend trip to Kent, Ohio with a 6-1 win over No. 13 Boston University (5-2). The Spartans had six different players score, with senior midfielder Amanda Huck and redshirt freshman forward Elizabeth Helffrich each recording their first goals of the season.
In a match that saw Boston University edge Michigan State in both shots (17-8) and corners (10-2), the Spartans were able to put together a strong offensive effort to capture the victory. Michigan State put in their first tally at 12:30, when Huck scored off of a pass from senior forward Sabine van den Assem on the left side. Freshman midfielder Katherine Jamieson was next to score for the Green and White at 27:03 off of an assist from senior forward Jantine Steinmetz.
Steinmetz assisted both of the Spartans next two goals, when senior forward Camille Dagorn and Helffrich recorded their tallies at 30:38 and 35:29, respectively. The Terriers were able to sneak one by freshman goaltender Molly Cassidy at 53:13 when Jacinda McLeod scored off of a penalty corner. It was then Steinmetz?s turn to put one in herself, when she connect off of a pass from sophomore forward Jessica Linder at 59:06.
Linder scored her third career goal of the season at 68:10 to secure MSU's 6-1 victory.
Cassidy made a total of nine saves against the Terriers, with six coming in the second period. Steinmetz finished up the game with three assists and one goal to up her season totals to four goals and four assists.
"There was great rebounding from the entire team and it was a true team performance," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "We had sixteen different girls play and it was great to have six different players score. Its great to come home with a quality win over a ranked opponent."
Michigan State is now 8-1 on the season and will return back home to East Lansing to open conference play on Friday against Iowa at 3 p.m.
