
Women's Golf Starts Play at NCAA Fall Preview

BRYAN, Texas - Opening the season with one of the toughest tournaments in the country, the Michigan State women's golf team is tied for 12th place after one round of play at the NCAA Fall Preview. The Spartans shot an 11-over 299 on Monday at the Traditions Club, site of the 2011 NCAA Championships. The elite 18-team field, hosted by Texas A&M, features 14 programs that participated in last year's NCAA Championships.
Georgia leads the tournament after one day with an 11-under 277, followed by Vanderbilt (284) and Alabama (286).
Leading the way for the Spartans in the first round of the 2010-11 campaign was senior Michelle Bowles, who carded a career-best 1-under 71 (35-36). Bowles compiled five birdies on the day and currently sits in a tie for 14th place.
Sophomore Caroline Powers is tied for 30th with a 2-over 74 (37-37). Powers collected two birdies on the front nine and one on the back.
Senior Aimee Neff shot a 40 on the front nine, but rebounded with a 36 on the back nine to end up with a 4-over 76.
Playing in her first collegiate event, true freshman Christine Meier rounded out the Spartans' scoring by carding a 6-over 78 (38-40).
Junior Lindsey Solberg finished her first round with an 80 (42-38).
