Laura Heyboer put the Spartans on the board in the fifteenth minute of the game with Olivia Stander given the assist. When the junior forward lifted the ball over the goalkeeper, the shot was tipped, then hit the crossbar, but spun down into the net.
The second goal of the game came only three minutes later, from junior mid-fielder Hannah Peterson, off a pass from freshman midfielder Kelsey Mullen. Peterson's first goal of the season was sharp-angle shot from the right side, but with a hard left-footed boot, was shot straight to the side of the net.
Stander tallied her fourth goal of the season in the 61st minute of the game. The sophomore forward had a tight angle on the left side but the shot passed the keeper's dive and went into the right corner of the net. Freshman defender Annie Steinlage had her second assist of the season on the play.
Junior goalkeeper Jill Flietstra sealed the shutout, her fifth this season, by stopping at all six attempts from the Ramblers. Flietsra's 13th career shutout ties her for fourth all-time in the MSU annals, and eighth for career wins with 16.
Also moving up the Spartan record book, Heyboer is now tied for fourth in all-time goals and third for career points, after her fourth goal this season.
Michigan State will be on the road next weekend, when they travel to Bowling Green, Ohio to take on the Falcons.
