EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team continued its success on day two of the Frank Beeman Invitational, advancing six Spartans to the final rounds in singles play, and two pairs of doubles in the finals.
The Spartans dominated the B Flight Doubles bracket as freshman Andrew Lied and sophomore Will Davis defeated Dudzik and Weigand of Toledo, 8-2, in the semifinal round. They will face teammates sophomore Denis Bogatov and junior Ronnie Hulewicz, who also advanced to the finals after beating Blomberg and Noel of Western Michigan, 8-3.
In A Flight Doubles, senior John Stratton and freshman Aaron Pfister were defeated by Likitkumchorn and Sarria of Toledo, 8-5, while red-shirt senior Jason Norville and senior Clark Richardson lost to Burus and Elzovic, 9-8, also of Toledo in the other semifinal round.
The Spartans will be represented in the finals match of the Green Flight by Bogatov, who defeated Aram Abgaryan of Duquesne, 6-3, 6-2, to advance. Hulewicz suffered his first loss of the tournament in the quarterfinal, 6-3, 6-2, to Cesaar Escobar of Dayton.
In the White Flight, Jason Norville defeated Leo Sarria of Toledo, 6-3, 7-6 (3), to advance to the finals, where he will face Brad Noel of Western Michigan. Noel defeated Stratton of MSU, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinal match to advance.
The finals in the State Flight will be an all MSU contest, as both sophomore Christian Roehmer and Lied advanced by defeating fellow Spartan Will Davis, 6-3, 4-6, 11-9, and Ross Vanderplog of Western Michigan, 6-3, 6-2, respectively.
The Spartan Flight will also match up two Spartans in its finals contest, as Richardson and freshman Aaron Pfister both advanced. Pfister defeated Gursher Harika of Toledo, 6-3, 6-1, while Richardson took down Daniel Kang of IPFW, 6-1, 6-2.
The Spartans will conclude the Frank Beeman Invitational tomorrow, September 12 at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts, pending weather. Contests will begin at 9 a.m. ET.
