EAST LANSING, Mich.-The No. 6 Michigan State field hockey team needed a second-half penalty corner conversion to sneak by Providence, 1-0, on Friday afternoon. The Spartans improve to 6-0 on the season, while Providence falls to 0-5.
Kristen Henn finally broke the scoreless tie in the 45th minute, converting on their fifth penalty corner of the day. Assists went to Joelle van Ierland and Sabine van den Assem on the set piece, as MSU scored their eighth goal off a penalty corner in the last four games.
The Spartans held a 20-5 advantage in shots, but the Providence defense was disruptive and blocked many would-be attempts by the Spartans. Those that got through were often saved by the keeper Shannon DiStefano, who made 11 saves on the afternoon to keep her team close.
Michigan State had 10 corners, compared to three for the Friars. Keeper Molly Cassidy made three saves to pick up her second shutout of the season. She also shut out Duke, 1-0, to capture the Champions Invitational title on Aug. 29.
The Spartans will be in action again on Sunday, when they host No. 12 James Madison at Ralph Young Field at noon.
