EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's tennis junior Whitney Wilson (Evansville, Ind.) was honored as the team's recipient of the 2010 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award as announced by the Big Ten office on Thursday, April 29.
Each athlete chosen for this honor have not only demonstrated success on the court, but have stood out in the classroom as well as in the community as well.
Throughout this past season, Wilson saw action at No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 singles, proving to be a versatile weapon for the Spartans. She also saw action at all three doubles positions and teamed together with four different partners. Wilson ended the season with an overall record of 12-10 in singles play and a doubles record of 12-12, including a perfect 8-0 mark at No. 2 doubles with freshman Amy Barton (Brisbane, Australia).
In addition to her on-the-court accolades, Wilson has attracted positive attention academically and civically. Wilson is currently a interdisciplinary studies in human resources major and holds a 3.45 GPA. Along with her individual accolades, Wilson has been a part of both the 2008 and 2009 team's to receive ITA All-Academic Honors.
This year, the women's tennis team made giving back to the community a top priority. One particular venture included a two-day trip to the Lansing Community Kitchen. All arrangements were made by Wilson, who also attended both days. The team went in two different groups to lend a helping hand to those less fortunate by preparing food for the afternoon and evening meals, and by serving breakfast.
"Doing things like this reminds me of how great I really have things," said Wilson. "Going out, putting smiles on people?s faces and getting involved is really worth it."
Wilson is now a candidate for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the Big Ten office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year.
