YPSILANTI, Mich. - Michigan State freshman pitcher Tony Wieber allowed just three hits in 6.1 innings of work and shortstop Jonathan Roof went 2-for-4 with three RBI as Michigan State defeated Eastern Michigan, 5-1, on Tuesday night in Ypsilanti. After giving up a leadoff homer in the sixth, Wieber got one more out before giving way to Tim Simpson who went the final 2.2 innings and held the Eagles hitless the rest of the way and got his second save of the year.
"Tony was outstanding again today, he keeps getting better and better with every start," said MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. "He threw strikes and made a lot of big pitches when he needed to. Tim came in and did what he was expected to do as well."
With the game scoreless, Jordan Keur led off the third inning with a double to left center field and after Brandon Eckerle got him over to third with a single, Ryan Jones singled up the middle to score Keur for the first run of the game. Jonathan Roof made it three consecutive Spartan hits with a double to left field that brought in Eckerle and Jones for a 3-0 lead.
Roof was able to get over to third base on the throw on the previous play and Jeff Holm made it 4-0 with an RBI groundout.
"We got a couple key hits in that inning, and overall, I thought we played very well," Boss said.
MSU went down in order in the fourth and fifth and had one one hit in the sixth inning before Roof came through with his third RBI of the day in the seventh to extend MSU's lead. With two outs, Roof singled through the right side, scoring Keur to make the score 5-0.
Wieber had a no-hitter working through five complete innings as he faced just two over the minimum before a leadoff single by Aaron Chavez to start the sixth ended the bid for the no-no.
Wieber gave up the only EMU run of the game in the bottom of the seventh when Matt Skirving led off the inning with a solo home run to right center field on a full count. Wieber got another out in the inning before Simpson came in to get the final two outs and keep the score 5-1.
Wieber finished with a career-high six strikeouts and picked up his second consecutive win to improve to 3-0.
The win improved the Spartans' record to 27-11, while EMU fell to 21-20.
The two teams will complete the home-and-home series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. and Cooley Law School Stadium.
