
Nicole Curler Finishes Action at NCAA Gymnastics Championships

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Senior Nicole Curler, MSU's lone representative at the 2010 NCAA Gymnastics Championships in Gainesville, Fla., concluded competition today (April 22) with an all-around score of 38.625. Curler narrowly missed second team All-America honors on the beam with a score of 9.850, placing 11th in the first session.
"We are so proud of Nicole's accomplishment as she represented Michigan State today with both pride and class," said head coach Kathie Klages. "With an error on her first event (uneven bars), she definitely came back strong in her final three events and competed with the heart of a champion. This was a great way for her to conclude her senior year and her career as a Spartan."
Rotating with Oregon State in the first session of the championships, Curler opened the competition on the uneven bars with a score of 9.250. Susan Jackson of LSU placed first on the vault (9.925). Daria Bijak of Utah, Summer Hubbard of LSU, Anna Li of UCLA and Hollie Vise all followed in second with 9.900 marks.
The Bay City, Mich., native would then proceed to the balance beam where she posted a score of 9.850, good enough for 11th place to narrowly miss second team All-America honors by .025. Tying for first was Jamie Deetscreek and Kyndal Robarts of Utah, along with Susan Jackson of LSU and Courtney McCool of Georgia all with a 9.900 score.
After a rotational bye, the Spartan senior would post a score of 9.800 on the floor exercise. That score was good enough for 26th in the session. Brittani McCullough of UCLA led all gymnasts with a 9.925 mark. Annie DiLucio (Utah), Makayla Stambaugh (Oregon State), Vanessa Zamarripa (UCLA) and Hollie Vise (Oklahoma) would all tie for second with a 9.900 score.
Curler would compete on the vault in her final event of the 2010 NCAA Championships where she posted a 9.750 mark, earning herself a 33rd-place finish. Susan Jackson of LSU finished first on the event (9.950), while Mandi Rodriguez of Oregon State was second (9.925) Tying for third with a 9.900 mark was Ashley Lee of LSU, Anna Li, Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs and Vanessa Zamarripa of UCLA, Brittany Skinner and Lora Evenstad of Nebraska, Sharaya Musser of Penn State, Mary Atkinson of Arizona State and Allison Buckley of Illinois.
Susan Jackson of LSU placed first in the all-around competition with a score of 39.625. Sharaya Musser of Penn State placed second (39.450), while Daria Bijak of Utah and Vanessa Zamarripa of UCLA were tied for third (39.425).
Advancing to the Super Six Team Finals tomorrow (April 23) was UCLA with a first-place score of 196.875. Joining the Bruins was Utah (196.625) in second and Oklahoma in third (196.550). UCLA, the Utes and the Sooners will all be joined in the Super Six Finals tomorrow by the top-three schools competing in the second session Thursday evening.
