EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team defeated the Toledo Rockets, 6-1, Saturday, Feb. 20, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility, improving to 7-3 on the season.
"It's good to bounce back from last night's loss," said head coach Gene Orlando. "Today was a tough four hour and ten minute match and it was much closer than the score indicates. We were in control but a lot of matches were tight."
The Spartans began the match on a positive note by taking two of the three doubles matches to win the first point. Senior Joe Vallee (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) teamed with junior Jason Norville (Farmington Hills, Mich.) to pick up a win at No. 2 doubles over Sven Burus and Leo Sarria, 8-4. The duo of freshman Denis Bogatov (Gurnee, Ill.) and junior Clark Richardson (Leawood, Kan.) posted an 8-2 win over Bryant Dudzik and Terence Weigand at the No. 3 spot to secure the point.
The momentum gained in doubles carried over into singles action as the Spartans earned five of six singles matches. Sophomore Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta,Fla.) battled at the No. 1 spot and defeat Nutthavit Likitkumchorn, 6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-0.
