EVANSTON, Ill. - Four Michigan State field hockey players were honored this evening at the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament Banquet as members of the 2010 All-Big Ten teams. MSU's top two seniors, forward Jantine Steinmetz and midfielder Sabine van den Assem, were both selected to the First Team, while the Spartans were represented on the Second Team by freshman goaltender Molly Cassidy and sophomore forward Kristen Henn. Senior back Meghan Magee was recognized as MSU's Big Ten Sportsmanship Honoree.
First Team All-Big Ten
In Michigan State's 3-2 first round win over the Big Ten Tournament hosts, Northwestern, Steinmetz tallied the first goal for the Spartans and assisted on Camille Dagorn's game-winner. It was her eleventh goal of the season and the 43rd of her career. She also leads the team with five game-winning goals. Steinmetz was named to the Second All-Big Ten Team both her junior and sophomore seasons and was honored as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2007.
Van den Assem has been a huge offensive asset for the Spartans since she arrived on campus this year. The forward from Tilburg, Netherlands has tallied eleven goals and four assists this season. This is van den Assem's first conference award.
Second Team All-Big Ten
Decorated by three Big Ten Freshman of the Week awards and two Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week laurels, freshman goaltender Molly Cassidy received Second Team All-Big Ten honors this season. Cassidy has compiled an impressive resume in her debut season in goal by posting a 1.63 GAA and a save percentage of .754. She has recorded five career shutouts, all at home, with two of her shutouts coming over ranked opponents.
Sophomore Kristen Henn was also a Second Team pick. Henn has been a huge part of Michigan State's success on corner plays and has played a part in many Spartan victories. Henn leads the upperclassmen with 21 points which came on nine goals and three assists. Three of her goals have been game-winners.
Sportsmanship Award
Meghan Magee was chosen as the Spartan to be honored with the 2010 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The Sportsmanship Award is given to individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. The student-athlete must be in good academic standing and demonstrate good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Magee has seen action in two games so far this season for the Spartans. She was an Academic All-Big Ten honoree last year and was named to the NFHCA National Academic Team since her freshman year.
