EAST LANSING, Mich. - Freshman goaltender Molly Cassidy (Encinitas, Calif.) was awarded her fifth conference laurel of the season when she was announced as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Monday (Nov. 1st). Cassidy's second Freshman of the Week honor comes after her 12 save performance in the Spartan's last regular-season game against Northwestern. MSU (14-4, 3-3 Big Ten) topped the Wildcats, 3-2, and were led by the strong defensive efforts of Cassidy, with eight of her stops coming in the first half. Her 12 saves were good for the second-most in her career and helped the Spartans capture their third conference win.
The freshman has a goals-against-average of 1.66, a save percentage of .754 and a total of five career shutouts. Cassidy was the last Spartan to be awarded as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week (and also awarded the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week) after her 14 saves game in MSU's 3-2 victory over No. 20 Stanford. Cassidy was first honored this season as the both the Big Ten Defensive and Freshman of the Week after recording her first career shutout when the Spartans defeated No. 10 Duke, 1-0, to capture the Champions Invitational Tournament Title in the beginning of the season.
Cassidy and the rest of the Michigan State Spartans will face the Wildcats for the third time this season in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. They will travel back to Evanston, Ill. to face off against NU at 10 a.m. ET on Thursday, Nov. 4.
