
Four Spartans Named to NFHCA All-Region West Teams

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Four Michigan State field hockey players were named to the 2010 Longstreth/ NFHCA Division I All-Region Team. Seniors Jantine Steinmetz and Sabine van den Assem and freshman goaltender Molly Cassidy were all honored on the All-Region First Team, while sophomore midfielder Kristen Henn was also recognized, named to the All-Region Second Team.
Steinmetz led the Spartan offense this season with eleven goals and nine assists. Steinmetz also recorded the most game-winning goals on the team(5). Over her career at Michigan State, the Amstelveen, Netherlands native has scored 43 goals and tallied 20 assists. Steinmetz was named Second Team All-Region her sophomore and junior years.
In her lone season as a Spartan, van den Assem tallied a team-high 12 goals. She also recorded four assists and one game-winning goal. Van den Assem scored the go ahead goal in MSU's first round NCAA tournament game against No. 3 Virginia before the Spartans fell to the Cavaliers, 3-2, in overtime. The midfielder from Tilburg, Netherlands, also scored the Spartans' only hat trick this season, against Ohio in Michigan State's 6-4 victory.
Both Steinmetz and van den Assem were also named to the First Team All-Big Ten for the 2010 season.
In her debut season in net, Cassidy compiled a GAA of 1.70 and a save percentage of .755. The Encinitas, Calif. native recorded five shutouts and stopped 108 shots, leading the Spartans to 15 wins. All of her shutouts came at home. Cassidy was honored as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week three times and the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week twice. Cassidy was also named Second Team All-Big Ten.
Henn was a huge part of Michigan State's successful corner plays in her second season in the Green and White. She scored nine goals and recorded three assists throughout 2010. Three of her nine goals were game-winners. Henn was also named to the Second Team All-Big Ten team this season and was third in points (21) behind Steinmetz (31) and van den Assem (28).
