East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State boasts five players that were named to the All-Big Ten Teams for the 2010 season, as announced by the Big Ten Conference on Wednesday (Nov. 10). Laura Heyboer and Jill Flietstra were named to the All-Big Ten First Team, while Katelin Chaklos made the All-Big Ten Second Team. Kelsey Mullen was selected for the All-Freshman Team and Courtney Shegos earned the Sportsmanship Award.
"We are very proud of all of our players that have received this recognition by the Big Ten Conference and coaches," said MSU head coach Tom Saxton. "The Big Ten is one of the elite soccer leagues in the country and this is a tremendous honor for each individual and our entire team."
Junior Laura Heyboer received her third straight First Team All-Big Ten honor. She tied the all-time scoring record only halfway through her junior season at MSU; with a pair of goals against Oakland on Thursday (Oct.14), Heyboer scored her 38th and 39th career goals, and is tied with Michele Wise (1986-89) atop the career goal-scoring chart. The forward's 10-2-22 scoring line is tied for 21st in points in a single season at MSU - Heyboer holds a tie for second (51 points in2008) and 23rd (21 points in 2009) in the single-season annals as well. With 13 career game-winners, she sits in second place in that category behind school recordholder Lauren Hill.
Jill Flietstra earns her first All-Big Ten honor. Flietstra spent most of the season among national leaders in all statistical categories before her season ended prematurely due to a broken finger suffered on Oct. 24 against Minnesota. In 17 games played, Flietstra notched a GAA of 0.64 and a save percentage of .885. With her outstanding season, she ascended into the top spot in the MSU recordbooks for career GAA (0.74). The keeper stopped 85 attempts this year, which gave her 161 in her career, good for eighth in the MSU recordbook. She is also tied with Erin O'Connell (1992-1995) for sixth in career wins (20); nine of which came in the 2010 season. Tallying 11 shutouts this year, Flietstra is now third in total shutouts with 18, and is one shy of tying the single-season record set by Nicole Galus in 2005.
Katelin Chaklos was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team for her standout play on the Spartan back line. Chaklos, also a first-time honoree, provided solid defense for Michigan State for all 19 games of the 2010 season. She was part of the Big Ten's third-ranked defense, allowing a GAA of 0.68 - the Spartans allowed just 13 goals this season. Chaklos also recorded one assist, coming in a 1-1 overtime tie against Iowa on Oct. 31.
First-year fullback Kelsey Mullen made the 2010 All-Freshman Team after starting every game of her freshman year. Mullen's earned one assist on the season, setting up Hannah Peterson for her goal versus Loyola Chicago on Sept. 12.
Courtney Shegos was MSU's recipient of the Sportsmanship Award. The 11 student-athletes chosen for the Sportsmanship Award are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. They must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Shegos demonstrated these ideals both on the field as one of the team's three captains, off the field as the women's soccer representative on MSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and as a standout in the classroom, with a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average.
