
Spartans Finish Day One of Drobac Invite

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team completed day one of the Stan Drobac Invitational with contests against Morehead State in doubles and singles, and doubles play against Xavier.
The Spartans dominated the Eagles of Morehead State, taking every match in both singles and doubles competition. Seniors Jason Norville and John Stratton gave MSU an impressive victory in one doubles, defeating Bradley Bryan and Lovell Medcalf, 8-1. Success continued in two doubles, as sophomore Denis Bogatov and junior Ronnie Hulewicz earned a victory over Hugo Almonte and Chris Shafik, 8-0. The senior-freshman combination of Clark Richardson and Aaron Pfister defeated David Clifford and Nathan Martin, 8-6, in three doubles. The Spartans earned their final victory in four doubles as freshman Drew Lied and sophomore Christian Roehmer defeated Chase Kindred and a player from Xavier, 8-3.
The Spartans continued their impressive play in singles, as Hulewicz defeated Bryan in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, while Norville defeated Clifford in two doubles by a score of 6-0, 6-3. Stratton earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Martin, and Pfister defeated Almonte, 6-1, 6-3, in four singles. Richardson defeated Medcalf 6-4, 6-0, while Lied and Roehmer finished the day off with victories over Shafik (7-5, 6-2) and Kindred (6-2, 2-0) respectively.
In doubles play against Xavier, the Spartans took two of four matches from the Musketeers, as Bogatov and Hulewicz defeated Bandy and Roebker in two doubles, 8-3, and Pfister and Richardson took the four doubles victory 9-8 (5) over Canelas and MacDonald. Stratton and Norville lost 8-5 in the one doubles match to Deye and Starr while Lied and Brooks suffered a close loss to Diaz and Pretorious 9-8(6) in the four spot.
The Spartans will continue action tomorrow (Oct. 6) at 10 a.m. at the MSU outdoor tennis courts, as they face Xavier in singles play, and Ball State in both singles and doubles competition.
