EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team concluded its first day of action at the Big Ten Indoor Championships today (Oct. 29) by completing both A flight and B flight doubles action.
In the A flight, both doubles pairs of sophomore Denis Bogatov and junior Ronnie Hulewicz, and seniors Austin Brooks and John Stratton suffered losses in its first matches. Hulewicz and Bogatov lost 8-6 to Juneau and Kendall of Indiana while Stratton and Brooks fell to Dehn and Ruddock of Minnesota, 9-7.
Bogatov and Hulewicz lost their second match to Roth and Alden of Illinois, 8-5. Stratton and Brooks rebounded by winning their next three matches, taking down Lee and Griffin of Penn State, 8-6, Vasos and Kauss of Iowa, 9-7, and Zolov and Dunn also of Iowa, 9-8 (3).
In the B flight, Spartan pairs were able to come away with first round victories, as senior Clark Richardson and freshman Drew Lied defeated Seaborn and Chen of Penn State, 8-1, and freshmen Aaron Pfister and senior Jason Norville took down Arndt and Peterson of Minnesota, 8-6. Pfister and Richardson went on to win their next match against Gilmore and White of Iowa, 8-5, before falling to MacTaggart and Vogl of Indiana, 8-3. Richardson and Lied also came away with a second round victory as they took down the joint-school tandem of Spartan freshman Ryan Richmond and Jackman of Northwestern. Richmond went a combined 2-2 on the day with Wildcat partner Jackman.
The sophomore tandem of Christian Roehmer and Will Davis were able to come away with a victory over Diercks and Gortworst of Iowa, 9-8 (6), after falling in its first round match to McCarthy and Blalaji of Northwestern, 8-6.
Action continues tomorrow at 8 a.m. as both the main and B flight singles draws get underway.
