
Spartans Finish Day One of Qualifying Rounds at ITA

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team concluded day one of action at the ITA Regional tournament today (Oct. 21) with three victories in the first qualifying round, and two in the second round.
Freshmen Aaron Pfister and Drew Lied both took victories for the Spartans in the first round, as Pfister defeated Tariq Ismail of Youngstown State in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6 (2), while Lied took down Jon Shwerin of Marquette, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Senior John Stratton earned the other victory in the first qualifying round by defeating Chris Baum of Valparaiso, 6-4, 6-0.
Pfister continued his success in the second round as he defeated Lippert of Ohio State, 6-4, 6-4. Stratton also advanced after beating Robles of Wisconsin, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. Pfister is set to face Montasser of Western Michigan tomorrow, while Stratton matches up against Buzzi of Michigan. Lied suffered his second round loss to Jozwiak of DePaul, 7-6 (5), 7-5.
Seniors Jason Norville, Clark Richardson and Austin Brooks all suffered defeats to host Notre Dame in the first round. Norville was defeated by Dooley, 6-3, 6-2, while Richardson lost to Johnson, 6-1, 6-2. Brooks was taken down by Bandy, 6-2, 6-2.
The Spartans will continue action tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 22 with qualifying singles action beginning at 8 a.m. and doubles play beginning at 6 p.m. The main draw play will begin at 11:15 a.m.
