Men's Tennis Upended By No. 47 Michigan

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State Men's tennis team fell, 7-0, to No. 47 Michigan on Wednesday afternoon at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. Senior John Allare (Masonville, Ohio) and junior Jason Norville (Farmington Hills, Mich.) partnered to pick up the lone win for the Green and White.
The Spartans came out strong in doubles action, but fell short of obtaining the point. Allare and Norville defeated the No. 51 doubles pairing of Jason Jung and George Navaz, 8-6, at the No. 1 position, improving to 14-8 on the season. The duo of Allare and Norville hold a 5-7 record at the No. 1 position and 7-0 mark at No. 2.
The doubles tandem of senior Alex Forger (Okemos, Mich.) and sophomore John Stratton (Monroeville, N.J.), and sophomore Clark Richardson (Leawood, Kan.) and freshman Austin Brooks (Houston, Texas) didn't go down without a fight. Both teams played strong, but ultimately both fell 8-6, to their Michigan opponents.
In singles, Forger, Allare and freshman Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta, Fla.) all forced their Wolverine opponents into tie-breaking sets. At the No. 1 position, Forger lost the first set, 4-6, came back and topped opponent Andrew Mazlin, 6- in the second set, but fell in the tie-breaker, 10-4.
Hulewicz opened play at the No. 5 position, defeating Navas, 7-5, but then dropped a set, 4-6. Navaz picked up the point after defeating Hulewicz in the tie-breaker, 10-4.
The longest singles match went to Allare and opponent, No. 98 Jason Jung, at the No. 2 position. Allare dropped the first set to Jung, 6-4, and then fought for the second win but fell 7-6 (2) in the tie-breaker.
The Spartans continue play this Saturday, April 11 when they will travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to take on Big Ten opponent Purdue. Play begins at noon.
