EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team fell to No. 53 Indiana Saturday afternoon at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts, 5-2. The Spartans two freshmen, Austin Brooks (Houston, Texas) and Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta, Fla.) picked up wins in singles action while the doubles pairing of senior Alex Forger (Okemos, Mich.) and sophomore John Stratton (Monroeville, N.J.) picked up a win for the Green and White.
Indiana picked up the doubles point in a very competitive start to the match. Sophomore Clark Richardson (Leawood, Kan.) and senior Scott Rasmussen (Moraga, Calif.) fell to Peter Antons and Maxime Armengoud, 8-4, to open play. The 79th-ranked doubles tandem of senior John Allare (Masonville, Ohio) and junior Jason Norville (Farmington Hills, Mich.) put up a fight at the No. 1 position, but came up short to the 76th-ranked Hoosiers tandem of Jeremy Langer and Santiago Gruter, 8-6, as Indiana claimed an early 1-0 lead. Forger and Stratton closed out doubles play with a win over Stephen Vogel and Lachlan Ferguson at the No. 2 position, 8-7.
In singles play, four of the six matches went to third sets, leaving the match up to either team. Indiana recorded wins in the first four matches clinching the victory.
Hulewicz and Brooks both went into tie-breaking matches and came up with the wins for MSU. Hulewicz defeated Maxime Armengoud, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, while Brooks took Stephen Vogel into a third set and won 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.
Allare and Rasmussen also went into tie-breaking sets, with Indiana's Gruter defeating Allare, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Langer of IU outlasting Rasmussen, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Spartans host the final dual match of the season against 11th-ranked Illinois on Sunday, April 19. Play will begin at 12 p.m., with the venue selected based on the day's weather.
